In 2025, our Reach for the Sky grant reached 25,000 UK 5-8 year-olds
(that's 400 schools!)

In 2026, our funding extended the age range to 5-11 year-olds, and we added a wonderful 'Jobs in Space/Aerospace' video and activity!

 

Now we need fabulous funders like YOU to help fund our next phase of remote delivery to schools ... and add to the 50 schools already funded by the UK Civil Aviation Authority and the Department for Transport, supported by the Satellite Applications Catapult and the UK Space Agency ...

What is the Moon Landing Coding Collective?
 

The Collective is a group of organisations and individuals, who would like to help us on our mission to inclusively inspire the space-tech innovators of the future!

 

It supports the work already completed by the UK Civil Aviation Authority, the Department for Transport, the Satellite Applications Catapult and the UK Space Agency, who have helped us create an amazing new piece of content for ages 7-11, to add to our existing Moon Landing Coding Adventure for 5-7 year-olds.

How can I help? 

Fund​ing pays for: 1 school, 5 schools, 20 schools (or more!), or it can simply be part of a single school coding adventure. 
Remote delivery of each coding adventure costs £684 +VAT. 

We find the schools (you can nominate some for us to approach), and once they have decided they are keen to take part, we then let members of the Collective in the region or area know all about it as soon as we can!

Volunteers are encouraged, but they aren't required for the school or group to to be able to run the coding adventure.

 

Any UK school or youth group for ages 5-11 (or children working at that ability level) are very welcome to take part, and can nominate themselves!

COMPUTING CURRICULUM KEY TERMS

As well as having a lot of inclusive space fun, we also ensure that the key terms in the computing curriculum are covered. Those covered in the Moon Landing Coding Adventure show are shown in italics below. All other key terms can be covered in selected follow-up activities.

KS1 curriculum (ages 5-7):

  • understand what algorithms are; how they are implemented as programs on digital devices; and that programs execute by following precise and unambiguous instructions

  • create and debug simple programs

  • use logical reasoning to predict the behaviour of simple programs

KS2 curriculum (ages 7-11:

  • design, write and debug programs that accomplish specific goals, including controlling or simulating physical systems; solve problems by decomposing them into smaller parts

  • use sequence, selection, and repetition in programs; work with variables and various forms of input and output

  • use logical reasoning to explain how some simple algorithms work and to detect and correct errors in algorithms and programs

 

WHAT'S INCLUDED

 

The Moon Landing Coding Adventure is a teacher-led 'red letter day' event, which usually takes a morning or afternoon to complete.

 

It comes with lesson plans and explainer videos, and includes:

  • A 20-minute assembly-style theatre-in-education main film, packed with coding and space content, references to the original Apollo missions, and mentioning Katherine Johnson and Margaret Hamilton as women who where part of the NASA team, supporting those missions.
     

  • A Jobs in Aerospace follow-up video and activity/worksheets, all about what jobs can be found in the space industry (and that it's not just astronauts and rocket scientists!)
     

  • A Program Yourself activity, 'programming' the children be robots, helping to put moon rocks on an imaginary conveyor belt on the Moon!
     

  • A Program Each Other activity, the children taking it turns being the designer, writer and tester (the robot), moving from the lunar lander to the moon rocks waiting to be collected (and avoiding the craters!)
     

  • A Scratch Programming activity, where the children sort the rocks ready to be put on the lunar lander to be brought back to Earth!

Teachers usually get the children to watch the main film show as a whole year group assembly, and then chose a selection of the activities that match the abilities and interest of their students.
